|, September 19, 2019 Seen purely as a character study, this one works. If anyone should have spent as much time on the couch as Woody Allen that would be Anna. It starts off with a seemingly harmless, almost romantic plot and... Audition is one of my all time favorite thrillers.

Enter demure, beautiful Asami Yamazaki (Elhi Shiina), who is everything Shigeharu hoped for. It’s almost as if it were the ending of another movie entirely.

A surprisingly dark film that does not fully develop any of its numerous plot points.

Coming Soon. In one of the many hopefuls in the line of children hoping to be admitted, Anna sees talent in a soft-spoken and reserved boy named Alexander (Ilja Monti). Parents need to know that this movie is rampant with bizarre sadomasochistic gore and violence. Perhaps that’s what the filmmakers were going for, but with so many details left off the page and screen, we can only puzzle as to just what this movie’s dark ending really means. It’s a jarring ending I can’t quite fit together with the events that came before it without making it bitterly heartless.
