Some of it is Morrison in his sunniest mood, and it's impossible not to get up and dance on some of these tunes. His verbal machinations are more annoying than usual when applied to traditional acoustic music, though some of them are interestingly reminiscent of Native American and other aboriginal moanings (particularly "My Lagan Love", where he also pronounces his consonants with John-Lydonesque emphasis). If you are spiritual, artistic, or just looking for some mind blowing music then check this out. Likewise, don't respond to trollish comments; just report them and ignore them. There was quite a lot of emphasis like that throughout his article; in fact, so much that I knew I would risk my money.

This is an excellent CD by Van the Man and the Chieftains. Don't post randomness/off-topic comments. I really enjoy this album. I found out about this CD while going through a daily newspaper, just encountering someone's article about how worthy it was. One night, I found my teenage daughter tapping her toes to Marie's Wedding - an easy-listenin' version of the traditional Celtic reel by some unthreatening folk band, and realised the time had come for her to meet Van Morrison and Irish Heartbeat. No matter what you may have to pay for this, the combination of Van Morrison's gravely voice (but perfect pitch) and traditional Irish music, is worth it. This sunny collaboration changes things considerably. I tend to be very conscious about my Irish roots, which are Orange and Green, so it took some time for me to get used to the fact that Morrison seems to be drawing heavily on black influences when he does Raglan Road. You can hear She Moved Through the Fair by Sinead O'Connor with the Chieftains in their cd, The Long Black Veil, more ghostly than this gravelly version from VM, but both stir the soul in their different ways. Irish Heartbeat received positive reviews from most critics, one of whom called it "some of the most haunting, rousing, downright friendly music of the year". It has so many interesting details woven in that it's sort of a Celtic design of the mind, the kind of thing you can listen to when you want to experience Ireland in an emotionally charged way. Fine poetry and popular music seldom come together as well as they do here.

Many years ago I had this on a pre-recorded cassette and I used to play it constantly. If you want to hear Van get in touch with his Irish roots, listen to Veedon Fleece. I have read some critics say that it doesn't quite work because Morrison sings, at times, in his unique style and injects his "Van-isms" into some of the vocals. The main influences on Van Morrison's music has been the blues, R&B, and his native Irish music, as well as the music he grew up with in church. Van is doing some Celtic inspired tunes with the Chieftans and it goes over really well. Probably the best version of "Carrickfergus" I've ever heard. The traditional Irish songs are not turned into upbeat, R'n'B or Celtic Soul versions, they are delivered authentically. So this one's recommended for diehard Van fans only.
